At this time I would like to ask everyone to stop and identify "open =

Jamie,
Well, I don't think we can "oversell" the tour. We probably should have
either an e-mail list or a forum for registrants. I'd include anyone who has
currently registered on the list or forum. If we use e-mail, I'd add an
opt-out button on the registration form. There might be a way to automate
it, so that as people register, they are automatically included. Another
addition, now that we have the segments pretty much established, would be to
ask what segments they are considering driving. Perhaps a check box for each
segment would be the way to work that. As people register, add, or delete
sectors in their plans, that would automatically trigger an e-mail to the
sector coordinator. We might then send monthly e-mails out to all the
registrants listing their information and choices and reminding them to
update it there are any changes.
As far as the open seat thing goes, I think we should have some kind of
bulletin board where people can post either "ride needed" or "vacant seat."
Keep in mind that those of us with saloons can accommodate up to four
people, so it's just a matter of posting the space.
One warning, I'm a great theory guy, not a good practice guy. The foregoing
is one of those things that is easily conceived, but I don't know how easily
it is implemented. I know that it could be done, but don't ask me how to do
it.

Another point on selling the tour.... I just visited the website and took a
look at our mention in the British mags. If I may make a suggestion, I think
the trip would be much more appealing if we listed the some of the exciting
places we are visiting, not just cities we are passing through. Some of the
cities such as New Orleans and San Francisco are destinations in themselves,
other cities would rate a ho-hum. Even then I'd note not just New Orleans,
but the world-renown French Quarter and Jazz. I'd mention that we'll be
experiencing the colorful Victorian architecture of San Francisco and
crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, the old North Church, the start of Paul
Revere's historic ride in Boston, The antebellum charm of Savannah, Georgia.
I don't know the details of other SCs routes, but I think we have to ask
ourselves what are the most well-known destinations for those of us in N.A.
and around the world. What are the things that would really generate
interest. Cities, yes, but we have to mention the Grand Canyon, crossing the
Rockies at over 10,000 ft. in Colorado and British Columbia. I'm sure we
could get some other instantly recognizable suggestions from other SCs. We
have to paint a picture of interesting places that people have always wanted
to visit and make JONAT and the camaraderie of traveling with other Jaguar
enthusiasts the one last bit they need to get off their duffs and go see
these places.
Another thing I'd include in future press releases is that, whenever
possible, we are going to travel America's back roads experiencing a time
when Mom-and-Pop stores called to drivers from the side of the road and you
couldn't see around the next bend until you got there. Twists and turns will
challenge the experienced driver who wants to push their Jaguar, while the
scenery that has greeted motorists for over half a century will delight the
more sedate driver. Mentioning Route 66, the "Mother Road" in this context
would be pique the interest of almost any car-lover.

Agreed Mark. Victoria and Vancouver are also major "destinations" and would
be worth mentioning in this sort of context.

Sorry guys, I'm on a roll. :-)
This is just a simple question. On the SC map page, does anyone think it
would be a good idea to have e-mail links for the SCs' names so if a
participant wanted to contact them about the particulars of their sector
they could just click on the name and send an e-mail?
Just a thought,

As I was composing that last e-mail about "selling" the tour, I was
referring to the JONAT maps. What's the deal with the Southeast U.S.? We
have a couple gaps for about 3/4s of our circumnavigation, then you hit the
Confederacy (quite literally) and we have Fried and Hudson and that's it.
(And Maryland and Florida weren't solidly in the Southern camp during the
Civil War anyway. :->)
I know the JCNA might me a little sparse between Florida and Texas, but
there are a bunch of clubs down the Eastern Seaboard. Has someone gone onto
the JCNA website and pulled the e-mail addresses of the club officers in
those areas without SCs and e-mailed them to see if anyone is interested in
handling a sector. I recognize a lot of JCNA names already. Perhaps if some
of you have friends in those clubs or know the officers you could contact
them (with the Executive Committee's approval, of course).
I only suggest this because something this size needs to be planned for by
participants well in advance, especially if you have to request vacation
time from work. People aren't going to be overly excited about committing if
they don't know where they're going.

I think this is the last of my communiqués for the moment, unless something
else tweaks my one-man brainstorming session. (I'm making these all separate
so that each can be discussed individually and easily found in the
archives.)
As I was writing up my suggestions on "selling" I began considering the
places I've visited that impressed me and that I would consider
continentally and internationally famous. One is Gettysburg. As a
grade-schooler our class visited there on a couple of occasions. Even as
kids, who are not easily impressed by the vast sweep of history, we were
awed as our teachers painted a picture of what happened there. The American
Civil War and, to a certain extent, WWI were the last to employ hand-to-hand
combat as the prime battlefield strategy, in world where long-range
munitions had become available. The effect was devastating. There were as
many Americans killed there in three days as there were in the entire
Vietnam War. One could easily get lost in the magnitude of it and spend
days, but there is a drive through the park that takes you to all the
important battle sites. Could you get through in 3-4 hours? I'd have a hard
time, but I think so.
Another internationally famous spot is Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of
North Carolina. Our route doesn't go near there, but we don't have a SC
either, so I guess it's open. We drove that a few years ago and it is
beautiful, sand dunes and sea grass. You enter by bridge on the north end.
In some places the outer bank is so narrow that you can see ocean on either
side, there's a short ferry trip between two banks in the middle and a
longer one, about an hour and a half, IIRC, at the south end. There is space
on the ferry for quite a few cars. It would require some logistical work to
get the timing right so everyone could make it on one ferry. There's about a
two hour wait between ferries as they have two that crisscross between the
mainland and the outer banks. But, with as much driving as we're doing, I
don't think anyone will complain about a little time out of the cars gazing
out over the Atlantic Ocean toward the mother country (for our cars,
anyway).
That brings me to Atlanta. While it would be great to stop and see Greg at
Coventry West (who might make a good SC, and CW, a good sponsor), I wonder
if that's an exciting place to stop? If Greg was a SC and CW a sponsor, then
definitely, but otherwise, I think running along the coast would be an even
more pleasant drive. The closer we are to the ocean, the cooler it will be.
We could run down through Charleston, where they have some beautiful
antebellum plantations open for tours, and then on to Savannah.

Mark,
The information that I provided to Jaguar Enthusists Magazine & Jaguar World are not "press releases". They simply represent me copying 5 or 6 pages from the Jonat Web Site at the back end of March & forwarding them to the above mags (plus the XK Magazine which has´nt bothered to print anything)with the suggestion that the tour might be of interest to there readers. Personally I was rather disappointed with the coverage although I know now that the JEC is just about to promote its own tour of the US in mid 2004.

In the beginning the Union Jack icon on the SC map pages were set up that
way. It looks to me like we have made some changes to how the links work as
we have progressed. The best one I can find right now is Craig Talbot's
Calgary Sector (I haven't tried all of them - but Gregory's doesn't work
when I click on his contact email addy) So I'm thinking they are to work
like Craig's. Maybe this is too far into the Site for what you are thinking
Mark? The following is what I had to if I wished to send Craig a note. It
makes since though as I am thinking someone would be looking at the
particular Sector map (which is directly above his name), when they perhaps
think of a question for Craig.

Simon,
No problem. I wasn't being critical. Taking the initiative to let them know
is highly commendable. Other than at our local club, I haven't done anything
to get this published anywhere. I was just trying to come up with some ways
to generate even more interest. With the input from SCs we should have a
list of sites that no one will be able to resist.

Oh, OK. We were in the same place, but I was trying to click on the name,
not the flag. I think if it's easy, I'd make both the name and the flag
e-mail links. The more to click on, the easier it is. Or, another idea,
since the flag is on the route, I'd make that a link to the itinerary if you
can have it point to a particular section or page in the .pdf document and
make the name link to e-mail. Then you could add flags to the unassigned
segments for more info, but leave the names blank.
Just a though, and only if it's quick and easy.

I'm with ya Mark ... I have it set up that a click on the logo beside the
names links to a website that sort of introduces the sector. This has a
link to the SC's e-mail address. The intent would be to link to individual
sector websites (has anyone done one of these yet besides Mike in Ottawa?).
If everyone likes, I can link the name on the webpage direct to the e-mail
address. Comments?

|Sorry guys, I'm on a roll. :-)
|
|This is just a simple question. On the SC map page, does anyone think it
|would be a good idea to have e-mail links for the SCs' names so if a
|participant wanted to contact them about the particulars of their sector
|they could just click on the name and send an e-mail?
|
|Just a thought,

Thanks Mark ... I've tried a few of the places starting with Orlando and
working west where we do not already have SC's. Did not get around to the
eastern seaboard when things got a tad busy here and have not gotten back to
it. Anyone have any contacts in the "empty" sectors?

|As I was composing that last e-mail about "selling" the tour, I was
|referring to the JONAT maps. What's the deal with the Southeast U.S.? We
|have a couple gaps for about 3/4s of our circumnavigation, then you hit the
|Confederacy (quite literally) and we have Fried and Hudson and that's it.
|(And Maryland and Florida weren't solidly in the Southern camp during the
|Civil War anyway. :->)
|
|
People aren't going to be overly excited about
|committing if
|they don't know where they're going.

Great ideas Mark ... keep 'em coming. I think each SC might want to put
forward two to four "places to visit" in their Sectors. I'll put them on
the website, and perhaps we can put them on a brochure or advertisement or
some such.

|
|I think this is the last of my communiqués for the moment, unless something
|else tweaks my one-man brainstorming session. (I'm making these
|all separate
|so that each can be discussed individually and easily found in the
|
|Civil War and, to a certain extent, WWI were the last to employ
|hand-to-hand
|combat as the prime battlefield strategy, in world where long-range
|munitions had become available.
|
|
If Greg was a SC and CW a
|sponsor, then
|definitely, but otherwise, I think running along the coast would be an even
|more pleasant drive. The closer we are to the ocean, the cooler it will be.
|We could run down through Charleston, where they have some beautiful
|antebellum plantations open for tours, and then on to Savannah.

This is definitely a first draft, but I think it worth while as a sample

Yes, no problem to put up a site, but Robert will have to send me
some pictures. There is no scenery on the prairies to match what
he can show.

Oh com'mon, get creative. When I lived in Arizona I found the desert to
turn a beautiful arrangement of colors during the Spring of the year.
Likewise when I was in Wichita KS, I found the trees lining the rivers to be
a cool contrast to the flatness and flaxen color which went on forever.
Well, flatness? Not really as I swear I could see the curvature of the
earth from my 10th floor hotel room window!

Larry Lee has volunteered to help us out on the Georgia area sector, and
already has Bill Trimble signed up to help him out (or do I have that
backwards?). Welcome Larry and Bill! Everyone out there not on summer
holidays say "Hello Larry!"
Anyway, I hope things are starting to cook in each of your sector planning
efforts. The last few months have raced by rather quickly, and I expect
that the few months remaining until we start the tour in April will go by
even more quickly.
Route planning is an ongoing thing, but if you have any more updates for me,
please let me know. For those of you who have not seen your updates posted
to the website will have to bear with me as I'm having a spot of bother
uploading new information to the website at the moment. Hopefully Greg can
have me sorted out in short order.
Also, any updates, thoughts, comments that you might have as you "test
drive" your routes this summer would be useful to pass on to the rest of the
SC's.

This is just a test to make sure that this mailing list is functioning
properly after the spot of bother last week with the power outage out east.
Could I trouble everyone who receives this note to send me a reply either to
the list or to me personally so I know everyone is back online.
Thanks.

Got it Bob. This is just a slow time for Jonat planning. We'll get on to it
seriously in the autumn. Plenty of time, I think.

Hi, Bob,
California is using all its power outages to
recall a governor and replace him with a stripper,
a clown, a muscle man, or a pornographer. No
way we will lose power now, man!

Psssst. Wanna buy some joules, cheap?
I guess Ontario should have bought some real power along with all that
imaginary power they have been paying us for.
