[JONAT] Lake Havasu to San Diego

Hazel,

The handoff would be Lake Havasu.

The problem with Phoenix is to dang hot. It could be anywhere from the
mid-eighties (if we're lucky) to 100+ for daily highs in early May. On
average, our 1st day of 100+ temps is May 9. It's happened as early as March
23. The heat would hit when you come off the Mogollon Rim an hour north of
Phoenix and continue the whole way through Yuma and about 2/3rds of the way
across California. There's nothing but Interstate for most of the trip
between Phoenix and El Centro, and it has to rank way up there among the
most boring routes in the world.

The highlight of our sector (besides the Grand Canyon) is joining up with
all the fun and excitement of the Rt. 66 Fun Run from Seligman to
Topock/Golden Shores. That's about 30 miles N. of Lake Havasu. If you have
another idea for getting from Lake Havasu to SD that's great. Mine were only
suggestions. Speaking for myself, I'd prefer a long boring two-lane to a
long boring Interstate.

We're still going to have the heat problem from the Colorado River at Lake
Havasu to wherever it gets cool heading into San Diego, but if we leave
early enough we can beat the heat.

One thing you might consider, depending on what you have planned of SD, is
to overnight someplace maybe 50 miles north to east of SD. We have a short
drive from SD to LA the next day, so we could make an hour drive to your
stops in SD, then head up LA, which would only be, what, an hour and a half
drive? Just a thought. If you don't like the Salton Sea, coming across on
CA74, CA371, and down CA79 into the Cleveland National Forest looks
inviting. An overnight in Warner Springs Santa Ysabel, or even Ramona look
promising, although I know nothing about the towns or lodging. Escondido
would be another possibility. Mt Palomar in is the vicinity if we had time.
I think Indio is too far out, but maybe it would work.

Mark
