Hijacking Texas
Working backwards from Mark's dates, combined with slow travel through the
mountains, and a total lack of expressed interest in Texas, Oklahoma, and
Kansas, impels me to suggest the following route changes:
Combine the two days allocated for driving the 308 miles from Oklahoma City
to Garden City into one. A lot of driving, but nothing at all to stop and
do along the way. Perhaps change Garden City to Dodge City, as well (adding
53 miles). This would cut the next day's travel to Denver/Golden (again
through a zero-interest area) from 454 miles to 401 miles, and even out the
driving.
Move the free day originally allocated to Dallas/Ft. Worth back three
nights, making it in Denver/Golden. This would change the the driving
schedule from 6 days - rest - 14 days - rest to 9 days - rest - 10 days -
rest. Those who did not wish to spend so much time driving each day would
then be able to catch up.
I feel it better to get this section over with rather than drag it out at
the expense of more interesting terrain. Reactions/comments?
Proposed Schedule Revision:
April 21 Houston - Dallas/Ft. Worth
April 22 Dallas/Ft. Worth - Oklahoma City
April 23 Oklahoma City - Dodge City
April 24 Dodge City - Denver/Golden
April 25 Denver/Golden - Denver/Golden (flex day / local sightseeing)
April 26 Denver/Golden - Gunnison
April 27 Gunnison - Durango
April 28 Durango - Mesa Verde (MVNP tour day)
April 29 Mesa Verde - Page (side trip to Monument Valley?)
April 30 Page - Williams
