Hazel,

When planning from Lake Havasu to San Diego, take into account daily high
temps through the desert. There could be old Jags and old drivers who don't
like the heat. It may require an early start or a cooler route if one
exists. 

The other thing I think most of us are trying to do is stay on the two lane
roads in rural areas. I know I prefer them to Interstates.
