>From my personal experience on the tour, the best days were those with plenty
of slack. These were not necessarily those with the longest or shortest
total mileages, but those where, if I encountered something interesting, I had
time to stop and smell the roses without destroying someone's schedule.
There
were several extremely frustrating occasions where I wanted to stop and see
something, but could not without breaking away from the tour. A four minute
photo op at a national forest, sandwiched into two hours of driving, is not
what
I enlisted for. If getting from point A to point B without stopping is your
thing, run the Cannonball.

On the other hand, I loved it when the group paused to create our monument by
the railroad tracks, and later when everyone then turned around en masse to
go back a few miles to check out a local point of interest. This is what
touring should be about!

Curiously, this had nothing to do with the level of participation. I had as
much fun during our my days alone as I did on the two days of the Route 66
Fun Run which we shared with 700 non-Jags. In both cases, there was plenty
of
time reserved for poking around and seeing the sights.

As someone who was on the road for 14 nights, I cannot stress this enough:
For those participating for more than a week, there has to be a full day per
week where those who need to can spend two nights in the same bed. You need
a
breather to get down under the car for a several hours, and do your laundry,
get caught up on our sleep, and just decompress. (Preferably where and when a
Jaguar dealer is open!)

Actually, this point came up during our drive and is quite valid. If you
have a huge caravan of cars the logistics and management necessitate fairly
rigid parameters and that takes away the fun, IMO.
Maybe the answer , in the event of large number of cars in a sector, would
be to have 'platoons' with a 'platoon leader'. All going the same route but
able to optimize their group activities as they wish? And different RF,
please! :-)
