John,

I have three sources for cast iron repair here in San Jose,
California. Depends on how bad the crack or how large the broken out
area is and how fast or who much $ you want to spend.

1) John Palmer. John was a tool and die maker for Dixi Cup, actively
retired at 94 with a back-yard machine shop. He has built several
exact full size operational replicas of Wright Brothers aero engines
for flyable replica Wright Flyers. Good work on small cast iron
repair. One man shop slow turn around. Does a lot of fabricating of
parts for our local antique farm engine/tractor collectors.

2) Quality Machine Shop. Quality has been in business nearly 100
years. Specialize in brass era automotive and motorcycle engine
rebuilding. Lots of welding and brazing of big cast iron cylinder
jugs and blocks. One man shop so not a fast turn around.

3)Lock N Stitch, Turlock California. Professional cast iron repair.
You can send them your project if it needs welding or brazing as they
have heating and stress relieving ovens etc. They are very helpful
with advice; great web site.

They sell kits to make your own repair of cracks by expansion
plugging, or, for thin walls, 'pulling together' with special
screws...amazing! I have used the 'pulling together' screws on my
tractor engine water jacket. The thread on these screws is cup-shaped
and tightening them pulls the crack together! The screws are
over-lapped as you proceed along the crack. They break off when
tight, grind smooth.

On their web site...> on-ine catalog>crack repair tools &
supplies>metal stitching pins> ...then click on the 'C' series
pins...these are 'pull together' type.

They supply pins for aluminum too.
