[Mg-t] Rear Shock bush replacment - sans insertion tools

Job is done - in case anyone is interested this is how it went.

The Moss bush will not go in the eye without being compressed in some way.

I tried using a hoseclip but that did not work.

Rummaging in the box of junk that may be useful one day I found a short tube
socket (like the ones in the TD tool kit you never use).

The hex was 22mm AF and one end and 25mm at the other. I cleaned up and
lubricated the inside with soapy water and pressed the bush through it till it
was just protruding from the 25mm end.

In then offered it up to the eye and using a big vice and appropriate sockets
pushed it through into the eye.

Using a tiny socket with the drive end the same OD as the pin and an
appropriate socket to support the bush in the pin I then pushed the pin
through with the soapy water as lubricant.

Getting the other end through the bush in the shock is not easy on your own
because it wants to twist, but by assuming the 'greasy stork" yoga position
and bracing the shock with my knee I got it in.

For how long for who knows, but hopefully removing the PO15 from the pins will
help.

On another topic: last month I replaced the original gearbox with a 5-speed
one from a Toyota corolla. This is a kit made in new Zealand by Rod Brayshaw.

You use the original bell housing which bolts onto a conversion plate on the
front of the gearbox, and a modified drive shaft with a spine at the front
end. Apart from removing a couple of bits of metal from the gearbox cover and
drive shaft cover the chassis is not altered. And a hair-shirted future owner
can always return it to stock. I tend to use the TD for commuting to work and
riving in traffic is now much nicer.

Cheers

Douglas

Subject: [Mg-t] Rear Shock bush replacment

Greetings for New Zealand

I need to replace the rear shock rubber bushes on my TD (girling).

I have the bushes, but not the installation kit and have been unable to borrow
one locally.

I have read the useful article by Larry Shoer
http://www.ttalk.info/Shoer-Girling.pdf

I had POR15 the pins which would probably explain why they came out!

I can see how to do most of it with assorted sockets vice and drill press and
can make up the little bullet guide.

I would be grateful for suggestion on how to get the bushes into the holes
without the tapered guide.

Thanks

Douglas
