Barney, 1974 Chrome bumper with the BIG rubber overriders, a friend / customer car.
The issue was resolved when I removed the double wire terminal from the distributor side of the coil going to the tachometer.
Sorry I do not have the VIN.
Len

Thanks for the tipBarney, but it does not apply to this car.
BTW I have seen (electronic) tachometers go bad and kill the engine about4 times on various cars

Later model MGB have ballasted ignition with a 1.5 ohm coil and a 1.5 ohmballast resistor. The third wire goes to the starter solenoid, sothe starter can bypass the ballast resistor and switch full batteryvoltage onto the coil during crank starting.

Thanks Barney, but I have 3 wires on the distributor side, one to thepoints, and the terminal that goes to the tachometer has a double wireconnection, so 1 to the points, 1 to the tachometer, where does the otherone go to, or do they both go to the tachometer?

Two W/B wires there on one terminal, one from coil "-" todistributor, and one from coil "-" to tachometer.
