THE ANNOYING TICKING SOUNDING PUMPS ARE THE FACEL.
IF YOU MOUNT THEM IN YOUR BOOT YOU WON'T HEAR IT WHILE
YOU ARE DRIVING AND THE TICKING SOUND WHEN YOU START UP THE CAR IS SOOTHING
BECAUSE IT MEANS
YOUR FUEL PUMP IS WORKING.

I HAVE ONE IN THE ELAN.

That's what he's talking about, John - the points he's looking for are
electrical contact points that control the stroke triggering of the
pump. Those SU pumps (Ron, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these
pumps are all SU, but perhaps the points are made by Lucas?), like many
old fashioned pumps for gasoline or diesel, use contact points to
control a solenoid coil, which operates the diaphragm to pump the fluid.
That leaves Ron the decision to keep it stock, or go to a more
contemporary pump. There are a variety that include those little square
jobbies that make that annoying ticking sound (I like the sound of SU
pumps, but not those little electronic ones), or small, quiet rotary
pumps like those sold by Pierce for use with Webers and other carbs that
demand low pressures (1.5-2.5 lb/sq.in.). My guess is Ron wants to stay
stock - am I correct?
Ron - did you see Robin Jackson's kind email offer of a set of points?
He sent it shortly after your initial email.
Cheers,
Greg Tatarian
