Hopmonk of Sonoma is 691 Broadway as you come into town, on left as you come
directly towards City Hall. Newly refurbished place that would be great for a
NoBBCC gathering. "What could be more rewarding than finding a local hen
house?" "Excellent, A hen party!". All slogans from the Morland (now Greene
King) Brewers of Abingdon.

Hi Frank, I drank my first Old Speckled Hen beer over here about one month
ago at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol. It was great and I didn't know
they sold it over here. Where did you find it in Sonoma?

It was made close by the former MG plant in Abingdon, both have closed
since; hence the connection. The logo for the beer is the familiar MG
Octagon, which is also on the beer taps on pubs back home. I tried to get
one last time I was there but to no avail. Here's the connection straight
from the internet.

The story of "Old Speckled Hen"

"Old Speckled Hen" was first brewed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the
MG car factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Named after an old MG car which was
used as the factory run around, they would park the old MG Featherweight
Fabric Saloon outside the paint shop where it would normally get spattered
in paint and so it became known as the 'Owld Speckl'd Un'. This turned into
"Old Speckled Hen" when the beer was unveiled.

Since then the finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich malty taste and
fruity aroma has attracted many fans, including the fox, who is always on
the hunt for his Hen.

Andy

Speaking of "Uns"...does anyun have much insight on The Speckled Hen "Un"
brew
in celebration of MGs 50th in Abingdon? Interesting but rather limited
history
on Internet. I just tasted it for first time in Sonoma and have to admit I
liked the unique rather fruity Brit ale brew.

A toast to everyone in NoBBCC and MGOC...may ye all have a prosperous New
Year!

Cheers,

Frank and Candace

P.S. The red 61 MGA coupe is back on the road but I'm still ironing out the
bugs. Not going to make the drive on Sun. Enjoy wherever ye may wander. F.

?I agree with Mike--except that putting the top up is for Porsche (sorry
those that drive Boxsters as second vehicles) drivers.

In fact there is a good chance that I can join you all tomorrow, Ron! That
would make at least two red 'uns. Hope so.

See you all,

No offense to anybody, but in my mind, every day is top down weather, a
little rain shouldn't hamper a good ride, wear a hat, or put the top up. I
just wish I could join you, but surgery 10 days ago prevents that. Call me a
wimp, but two hours on my feet and driving in my Yukon yesterday left me
feeling extremely wimpy. Several hours in the passneger seat of my TR would
probably leave me real uncomfortable. Have a good ride tomorrow, post pics
if there are any
