Greg, as you know I like to keep my cars as original as possible but have
fitted a 5 speed to the MGA Coupe to make it drivable on the freeway and now
have a Frankenstein TF.  The TF is becoming my "play around with" car, I'm
keeping the Volvo engine because it has twice the power and an XPEG engine
would cost me around $7k which is more than the car is worth.  When you see
the car you'll understand, it's a good twenty footer.  So far I've fitted
MGB disc brakes and front suspension and a 3.9 MGB rear axle, so at least
the car with keep with the pack and stop.  I don't think it will be on the
road by Dawson's drive and it would need to be fairly warm as well.

On your Lotus Elan Coupe I would tend to keep it as original as possible
because it sounds really nice and original already and there probably aren't
too many left that way.  I'm looking forward to seeing it on Dawson's drive.

A couple of years ago, John Kenner and Ron Wheeler co-hosted a picnic at 
the parklands behind Ron's shop. John arranged and paid for a lot of BBQ 
chicken and sausages, and the attendees brought side dishes. John 
recruited his buddy, Steve, and yes, it is a lot of work, but was a 
really nice day. There was a short drive beforehand, with the BBQ and 
chatting being the central focus.
As you know, I held a tech session/potluck BBQ at our house last year, 
and a tech session at JNW Engine the year before with food I bought and 
attendees chipped in to pay for, as well as other tech sessions with 
food and drinks both at our house and at John's.
Dawson has hosted I think 2 Valentine's Day drives, with coffee and 
pastries and visiting before the drive, and last year's event included a 
stop at a winery for tasting. Dawson is kindly hosting another next month.
You yourself tried to arrange a day at Infineon, after the one you and 
Tim Thresh successfully arranged, which was well attended.
A few years ago, Andy hosted a pre-drive coffee/pastry/chat session. 
I've probably forgotten some similar events and contributors without 
intent to do so.
So, not impossible, but it does take one person who can line up the 
necessary location, supplies, and helpers, set the date, and do most of 
the work. We have lots of members, so hopefully another one of us will 
get inspired to host an event. I'm in favor of trying to get a more 
centralized location to attract more of our southern members, along with 
our regular friends.
Thanks to Clif for jumping in to put together a list of members' cars - 
hopefully the dataset will fill out as more members respond. Clif, 
please send me the list when you've finished compiling it.
Trish and I took the maiden drive yesterday in our new 1967 Elan S3 
Coupe SE (Special Equipment). It's mostly original, and has seen regular 
use, but needs to be updated and serviced. I'm struggling with the 
direction to take; keep it pretty much as-is, or do sympathetic upgrades 
as I have with the S4 drophead coupe. The S3 is more elegant in 
appearance, but feels more primitive than the S4, and is not as 
high-performance, or as well-restored. Trish and I are going to enjoy 
driving it a bit before I tackle the small fiberglass repair it needs 
near the headlight, but there are other things that I will have to 
decide whether they add to or take away from the classic character of 
the car. For example, it needs a new dash; do I stay with the standard 
walnut veneer, or choose a non-standard burl, or different wood? Change 
the original carpets? I don't want to lose the original character of the 
car, but do like my cars looking sharp.
To those who will be attending Dawson's drive - let me know what you 
think when you see the car, OK?
