One other thought - there is typically a relay on the side of the compressor.
Unplug the unit then disable the relay.
Hopefully given that replacement has been discussed, she won't even consider
repair*.  Even on relatively new appliances the repair vs replace equation is
skewing to the latter with surprising regularity.  It seems like regardless of
the reason anymore it costs $100 to get someone to come to your house.
* Unless she is suspicious.  Isn't it a shame that even after many years of
marriage some wives always seem to suspect their spouses of deviousness.
WHere do they get such ideas :)
