I don't know where you are on this, but I just ran across a T1500 
superwinch at etrailers.com, in the "bargain bin".  Check 
out:  http://www.etrailer.com/pc-BB~1215200.htm.  This is a 12V 
winch, so you'd have to do the battery and charger approach.  It's 
$99.95, regularly $159.95.  Superwinch is one of the known major 
winch manufacturers.  Should be a step up from the no-name harbor 
freight offerings.
