FWIW, I've had a similar experience that was caused not by the alternator
but by a shorted cell in the battery.

I wasn't so lucky, though, the hydrogen/oxygen mixture got ignited and the
first thing I knew about it was someone knocking on the door : "Did you know
your car is smoking?"

Stupid car design : running the hood release cable above the battery !
