[Shop-talk] question on LP tanks

Was this a brand new tank, or did you buy a pre-filled tank from an
exchange place?

Brand new tanks come empty, an need to be purged then filled.

If it was a prefilled tank there is an automatic shutoff that is supposed
to keep it from leaking when the hose is not connected. It is possible
that feature is not working as intended, especially on an older tank.

Another feature that might be getting you is the automatic shutoff that
comes into play if the flow rate is too high. This is sometimes an issue
if you open the tank valve too quickly, or your appliance is drawing too
much gas. This feature can be reset by closing the tank valve all the way,
then opening it very slowly to prevent the safety from tripping. I have
this problem on a regular basis with my LP shop heater.
