Car washes, for instance, repair their vacuums all the time. I have a newer Sears shop vac but opted to fix my old one as well because it's a far better form factor, being based on a 20-gallon steel drum. The new vacuums are excessively wide and take up valuable floor space. And while I always thought the old one was loud, now that I have both working, the old one has more power (same exact replacement motor) and the new one is louder. My post below was sent wanting opinions only on what I might get using a thinner part. This being said, I installed the part and my 30+ year old Rigid now works just as well as when new. I saw some initial replies expressing concerns about the balance of the part. It sits on an axle that has a shouldered mount that matched the new part perfectly and appears to be just fine.
