Old school chargers are just a transformer and a rectifier. There is nothing to regulate the voltage. Most of the better ones had a timer to limit the charge.
The newer, "smart" chargers will not overcharge a battery when working properly. But all bets are off it there is a shorted cell in the battery.

Yeah, I parted with most of my old-school chargers a while ago.
I guess in a world where I have unlimited time I would research, build and install some smarts on the one remaining dumb charger, but that's in an alternate universe ...

Overcharge caused by overvoltage. The only I know of that causes an explosion like that is hydrogen gas caused by overcharging along with a source of ignition. That's why it is now recommended to ground to the chassis, instead of the neg. terminal, when jump starting. Note even 'maintenance free' batteries have vents.
I ruined a battery on an 'old school trickle' charger; they are constant current power supplies and will keep pumping electrons even after the battery if fully charged. The newer smart chargers know when to stop.

Hard to think of anything better, but where the run off will go is a consideration.
I guess it goes without saying that careful PPE is called for.
What is causing the batteries to go? Overcharge? Overvoltage? Short circuit?
Something as dangerous as multiple batteries going off calls for some serious investigation and root cause analysis.
