I have to say that it is the best stuff I have ever used. Period. I recently changed the filters and replaced the ATF in the transmissions of my GMC Savana and Cadillac ATS, spilling ATF, of course, in various places around the garage. If you have ever done automatic transmissions, you know how badly ATF seems to spread everywhere and what a pain it is to clean up properly. I was struggling with rags and paper towels to clean it up until I remembered I had this stuff and gave it a shot. It was amazing! Simply amazing! If you just get it near oil, it seems to suck it up and then transforms into clean "sweepable sand." A tiny bit will absorb large quantities of oil and it leaves the surfaces clean and dry. I will never use cat litter again. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Brian -----Original Message----- From: John Innis Sent: Jun 10, 2026 3:36 PM To: Brian Kemp Subject: Re: [Shop-talk] Old toolbox combo lock These typically work on single turn R-L-R pattern. Turn the dial to the right, at least full revolution, then continue turning right to the first number. Turn Left to the 2nd number directly (do NOT do a full turn first). Then turn right to the 3rd number directly, again, not making a full turn first. This pattern works on very simple combination locks found on some toolboxes. If that pattern does NOT work try this: Turn the dial to the right, at least THREE full revolutions, then continue turning right to the first number. Turn Left one full revolution, past the first number, then turn to the left to the 2nd number Then turn right to the 3rd number directly, not making a full turn first. One of these two patterns should work on 95% of the dial combination locks out there. Concise Takeaway Stand?alone scanners are faster, more reliable, and better for quick, no?nonsense diagnostics. Phone?based OBD2 adapters are more powerful, more flexible, and better for live data, logging, and advanced features. ? Side?by?Side Comparison Below is a structured comparison using the most representative examples from your shopping results: Standalone: Motopower MP69033 (simple, rugged, plug?and?go) ANCEL AD310 (classic, reliable, inexpensive) Phone?based: BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro (full-featured, pro?grade app) OBDLink MX+ (fast, secure, excellent logging) To make this scannable, here?s a qualitative comparison table: Standalone Scanner Motopower MP69033 / ANCEL AD310 Fast Simple No Setup Phone Adapter BlueDriver / OBDLink MX+ Most Features Live Data Logging Basics Ease of Use Instant plug?and?read Requires phone + app Speed Very fast Fast, depends on phone/app Reliability High, no wireless issues Can vary (Bluetooth, app updates) Capabilities Read/Clear Codes Yes Yes Live Data Limited Extensive, customizable Freeze Frame Yes Yes Mode 6 Sometimes Usually ABS/SRS Rare Supported on higher-end apps Bi?Directional No Sometimes (BlueDriver limited, OBDLink depends on app) Practical Use Garage Durability Excellent Good (depends on phone) Power Self?powered Uses phone battery Data Logging Minimal Excellent (graphs, logs, export) Vehicle Coverage Basic OBD2 Often broader, with enhanced OEM data Ownership Price $29?$49 $129?$139 Long?Term Use Never obsolete App updates may change features Best Use Case Quick checks, simple diagnostics Deep diagnostics, logging, analysis Sources: BlueDriver +4 BlueDriver. ANCEL AD310 Classic Enhanced Universal OBD II Scanner ? What This Means for Real?World Use Standalone Scanners ? Strengths Instant results: Plug in ? codes appear. No pairing, no app crashes. Great for older vehicles (like your GMC Savana or classic projects). Rugged: Works in cold, heat, dirty garages. No phone dependency: Useful when your hands are greasy or battery is low. Cheap: $30?$50 gets you a reliable tool. Standalone Limitations Minimal live data (slow refresh, few PIDs). No logging or graphing. No enhanced OEM modules (ABS, SRS, transmission). No bi?directional tests. ? Phone?Based Adapters ? Strengths Massive capability jump: Live data, graphs, logs, freeze frame, Mode 6, custom dashboards. Enhanced OEM support (BlueDriver especially). Great for intermittent issues: You can log a drive and review later. Fast refresh rates (OBDLink MX+ is one of the fastest). Expandable: Different apps for different vehicles (Torque, Car Scanner, BimmerCode, Hybrid Assistant). Phone?Based Limitations Bluetooth pairing issues happen. Phone battery drain during long sessions. App updates sometimes break features. Not ideal for quick roadside checks. More expensive ($129?$139 for good units). ? Which Should You Use? (Tailored Recommendation) Given your background?hands?on diagnostics, vintage motorcycles, older vehicles, and practical garage workflow: Best Overall Setup for You Use both: a cheap standalone + a high?quality phone adapter. Why? The standalone gives you instant, reliable fault checks when wrenching. The phone adapter gives you deep data when you need to chase intermittent or performance?related issues. I've been using an OBDLink LX for a while, a bright green little thing that plugs into the OBD port on the vehicle. And it communicates with the OBDLink app on my android phone via bluetooth. Works pretty well, reads/clears DTC codes, can display real time info like water temp, rpm, speed, battery voltage, etc. Also has accelerometers, though I don't think I have ever checked those while driving my car. Can't remember how much it cost or how long ago I bought it. I am sure a web search on OBDLink LX will provide current pricing. The company also offers an MX model, which has more features, and a price tag that reflects the extra features. But about a week ago I had ordered an iCarSoft LR 4.0 scanner for just over $200 that has Jaguar/Land Rover specific software. Pretty slick, I got it because of the Jaguar XK I bought last year. It will read 6 digit DTCs, whereas the OBDLink only reads the basic 4 digit codes. I haven't used it much yet, probably overkill for most people. So I am not yet sure if it is the greatest thing ever or a total waste of money. I would stay away from FIXD and really cheap ones, too basic. I do have a couple of handheld stand alone scanners I bought years ago, haven't used them since getting the bluetooth plug in unit. mjb.
