Oh, I know it happens all the time. I've seen it happen, I've seen
accidents happen because of it, I've had a friend who was a cop T-boned
for doing it...I got the information from a long time ambulance driver
who teaches defensive driving courses here at Rutgers. Not only does she
know the rules and laws, it is her job, so I pretty much trust her
word..I know that it happens all the time though..

I think you will find that is not the case in a lot of places. It
certainly is not here in Oklahoma where I work. The rules and
regulations regarding emergency vehicle operations are few and far
between. In many cases, when an emergency vehicle runs a red light/stop
sign, etc, and an accident ensues the other party is issued a ticket
for failure to yield to said emergency vehicle. May not always be
right, but it happens none the less. I personnaly have never caused
anaccident by going through a red light or 4 way stop with my lights and
sirens on. How many times have you seen World Wildest Police Chases and
see the cops stop at lights while giving chase?

In NJ (and I suspect most other states), all emergency vehicles must
stop for red lights, check to make sure that the intersection is clear
and then proceed with caution. It is illegal for them to proceed through
the intersection without stopping regardless if their siren and lights
are on.
