Wow, where do they work? While many calls are not true emergencies, it is
by no means rare in my experience that time is an issue. And ask yourself,
if your family member was in the back of that ems unit, is time going to be
an issue as far as you're concerned? That said, I realize the danger in
running lights and sirens, and the instances that I have ran priority 3
(lights and sirens) TO the hospital are rare, but time is very often an
issue, whether or not we decide to run priority 3. If time is not an issue,
then take yourself to the hospital, do not call an ambulance.

Many of the EMS people that I have talked to said that it is quite rare
that time is an issue in getting someone to a hospital. If they are that
close to death, they are usually dead on the scene or air lifted to the
nearest trauma center. Rushing someone who is in bad shape only
increases the risk of causing more accidents and is not worth it if the
person dies on the way to the hospital anyway. If they are ok when the
paramedics arrive and attempt to stabilize them, then they will most
likely survive the journey to the hospital, no matter how long it takes
(within reason)..

Agreed. Many times I've been on the interstate, behind an ambulance
going 75mph (in a 65mph zone) when my comfortable cruising speed is
around 80mph. Kinda frustrating, but you have to let the ambulance do
its thing, as someone's life may be at stake.

I found out some time ago that in Ohio, (or maybe just in Toledo),
emergency vehicles can only go 10 mph over the posted speed limit. The
fireperson who told us this said she has a friend who got a ticket for
speeding on the way to a fire. The police won't stop them en route, but
will note the station number and vehicle and send a violation to the
station. A friend who is a retired fireman confirmed that this is true.
If my house was burning, I think I'd want the fire truck to get there as
quick as humanly possible.

I think you will find that is not the case in a lot of places. It
certainly is not here in Oklahoma where I work. The rules and
regulations regarding emergency vehicle operations are few and far
between. In many cases, when an emergency vehicle runs a red light/stop
sign, etc, and an accident ensues the other party is issued a ticket
for failure to yield to said emergency vehicle. May not always be
right, but it happens none the less. I personnaly have never caused
anaccident by going through a red light or 4 way stop with my lights and
sirens on. How many times have you seen World Wildest Police Chases and
see the cops stop at lights while giving chase?

In NJ (and I suspect most other states), all emergency vehicles must
stop for red lights, check to make sure that the intersection is clear
and then proceed with caution. It is illegal for them to proceed through
the intersection without stopping regardless if their siren and lights
are on.
