Depending on the which virus it may have been....
Many of them will read the address book on the infected machine and send
itself out masquerading as someone else.
This is to lull the recipient into thinking that it is from a known and
trusted sender, increasing the odds that it will be opened and allowed to
propagate.
Good thing that you're running up-to-date virus software!
