[Shotimes] Checking timing

You check the timing with a timing light, not a multi meter. It gets hooked to the battery and the #1 spark plug wire. The crank pulley has a mark on it, and that mark shows up behind the molded-in degree scale on the timing belt cover (with the engine idling and the SPOUT disconnected).

Ok I was reading through my Code Scanner book the other day, specifically
the section on checking the engine timing. How exactly is this checked? It
mentions disconnect the SPOUT or SAW connector to reset the engine to base
timing which is 10 BTDC. How do you check the timing with a multimeter, if
so, where at? The disconnected SPOUT connection? Where exactly is the SPOUT
connection? The code scanner book mentions something about somewhere near
the ignition module (I'm assuming the coil pack). I looked the other day
and saw a small square connector, is that it? Thanks!!!
