[Shotimes] Climate control buttons

I need some help ASAP.  The buttons on my climate control have the usual
cracked all to heck problem ( I don't know how that happened).  Anyway I
recently purchased a front panel or face plate or whatever it is called that
has the new type buttons.  The buttons seem larger than the old ones( Gen I ).
Can I just access the front panel and snap out the old buttons and snap in the
new ones?  I do not want to use the entire front panel because the "lens" or
cover that goes over the florescent display has a rather bad scatch on it.  I
have the instructions from FAQ and I have read what there is in Helms.
Any suggestions?
