Joe, that is WAY at the top end.
A used tranny from someone like Al Fitz, delivered to a shop: no more than
$450 or so (including a warranty).
3 quarts of fluid, and two axle seals: $10-$20
Tranny R&R: $300-$500 (I wouldn't pay over $400 myself).
Whole deal, less than a $1,000. BTDT.

Matt, your differential died. I've been there. You will either sell your
SHO for parts, or go through a big tranny bill (get set
for $2500 or more). If you're lucky, the grenading diff did not damage the
case. (I was lucky this way when the diff in my 91
died.) If you were not lucky, then your dying differential took out your
tranny case, and you may need to scavenge from another
tranny.
