You want all of the dimensions to be set the same, and generally set to the 
point in their tolerances where they will benefit performance and/or engine 
longevity.  That is you want all of the pistons to weigh the same, all of the 

bearing clearances set just right, all of the cylinder compression ratios set 

the same and to their upper limit, etc.  The theory is that each car runs a 
little different, partly because one car will have slightly higher 
compression than another, or the camshaft will have slightly higher lift, 
etc.  If you could build a car that had the highest compression, the highest 
camshaft lift, etc. then you could theoretically maximize its potential.
