One thing I did to my old '91s engine bay that help alot was talking off the entire intake assembly and painting it.  Make sure you clean the thing out to with a good carb cleaner while you got it off, you wouldn't believe the amount of crap in that thing.
Then you can do the timing cover, coil cover, etc.
