Cars from that era were so loose that the air coming into the car could
easily escape. Today's cars are relatively air tight and with the windows
down, the air pressure builds up to a point that it will escape through the
open window and start building again, hence the 'pulsing'.

Now if anyone remembers the VW from the 60s, you'll remember the 'pain' of
sitting in the back seat with the front windows or sun roof open.
