Coque is old French, meaning "shell", and was derived from the Latin coccum,
or berry. This in turn came from the Greek kokkos.

Mono, obviously means one.

"One shell".

Originally used in the aircraft industry when referring to the newer
airplane designs that incorporated the skin as a stress-bearing part of the
air frame. The auto mfg's assumed the same name when they started designing
lighter car bodies that eliminated the external frame by carrying their own
weight. Our SHO's are a particular type of monocoque design, one that is
known as a unibody. Unibody originates as "unified body", which means simply
to take two separate bodies and put them together as if they were one.
Nothing more than a cheaper/easier way to assemble a car.

Duo, on the other hand, is not French at all. Itsa Italian!
