David,

Yep, there is a 90 degree bend in both the AC lines about 2 inches from the
firewall end.  That will only give you enough slack to pull the heater box
back about 3-4 inches before you run out of movement. You would need 8-10
inches of movement to get the heater core out.

I checked this carefully last month befor concluding there was no other way.
