[Shotimes] Alternator Problems

My alternator usually puts out around 14 V according to my autometer gauge.
The other day I realized that it was only putting out 12 then it was less
and the batter light came on. I turned the car off went to get my voltmeter
and ran the car a little and it was still putting out only 12 V. About an
hour later I took it out for a drive and it started out at 12V then jumped
to 14V while I was still at idle. The next day, I went for a 15 min drive
and it was reading 14V the whole time. Went into a store for 5 min came out
and started the car and the whole 15 min drive back the gauge was reading
12V. I have also taken measurements directly from the alternator so Im
pretty sure its not loose cables. Im guessing my alternator is on its way
out, but the fact that I intermittently get full voltage, and cant find a
pattern as to when and how I get full voltage, has me puzzled. Anyone have a
problem like this before? How hard is it to rebuild an alternator myself?
