[Shotimes] Re: Temp. Sensor(Outside Temp.)

There are 5 sensors that measure temp on the SHO:

A) The gauge sensor. A $4 part at AZ. Connected only to the gauge and not
very accurate or long lived.

B) The ECT sensor. Connected only to the engine computer. They rarely go
bad and seem to be rather accurate, telling the computer how much gas to
feed the motor when cold or hot.

C) The water temp sensor for the climate control. All that this does is to
keep the blower off until the coolant is warm enough to have heat to the
inside of your SHO.

D) The intake air temp sensor. It sits in the air filter box and feeds the
motor computer so it meters fuel properly.

E) The ambient air temp sensor. This feeds only the climate control, so you
can see how cold (or warm) it is outside. The climate control will go to
full cold or to full hot when it malfunctions. Rare that they go bad, but
when they do, you have to over-ride them with either a max cool or a max
heat setting on the climate control.

All of the above have no connection with actual overheating. First assume
the gauge sender is bad and replace it. Cheap!

The electric fan motor could be bad. It only comes on at low speed if the
A/C if off and the motor is close to hot. Or if the A/C is on, but still
only at low speed. You will have to either get the fan motor rebuilt at a
motor shop or get one out of a salvaged SHO. Try Al Fitz. As for the
relay, they are only rarely repairable, so pop for a new one from Ford.
$100+

Another thing to look for is the air deflector at the subframe. They
frequently get knocked off. The result is insufficient air through the
radiator. Remember that the radiator is marginal when new. A little
deposit will impede flow and cause overheating. Try radiators.com for a new
one. Also the fins on the A/C coil are really fine, hold a lot of junk and
are easily mashed by junk to limit air flow. Maybe you will have to clean
and get a comb to straighten them?

"double clutch" it's good for both you and your SHO

> Wow--that's uncanny! I just went out to my car, which is sitting with the
hood up to help it cool off, to look at said sensor. It looks exactly like
the sensor I just bought that's supposed to be the ECT sensor. Although,
looking at the picture in the Helms, the ECT sensor looks like what I
bought. The receipt, however, says "Ambient Temp Sensor". What gives?
I've got a Borg Warner part #WT381, which was indicated as the interchange
for the Wells SU201. It's black plastic, with a 2 prong connector inside
the top. Is this the ECT sensor that goes in the water outlet connection?
By the way, my symptoms are: temp gauge reads low side of normal on the
freeway, but overheats (all the way above the "normal" range) in stop and go
traffic. When I get a long stretch of road where I can get up to over 40
mph, the temp goes down fairly rapidly. Turning on the AC doesn't seem to
help. Is this the part I need to correct this?
