The difference between Ford and the federal government is that Ford has to make a
profit.  They also know how short peoples' memories are (or, conversely, they know
that not enough folks know enough about their cars to apply things they have learned
with old ones to new ones) and so they don't worry about the past's
mistakes.....just the past's financial losses.

They obviously can't take the risk that some kind of sport sedan with a stick would
make them enough money that they can slack off the Excursions and Explorers.
