The sound of a shim out of spec (and it has to be really out of spec to make
the noise) is just a ticking sound.  It's important to get that checked, as
if there is enough clearance for the lobe to "slap" the shim, there is a
fair chance of the shim being ejected from the bucket.  Then you are looking
at a new cam.  Another source of noise from that area could be the slave
chain.

What does the noise sound like?
