Bah. As much as I enjoy driving my buddy's '96 M3, I have also seen the
darker side of BMW ownership!
My wife had a 318i back when we were dating. It was a horribly
under-powered POS. It didn't feel like any piece of machinery that a
European automaker would be proud of. The sunroof rattled. The cabin
noise was bad. Did I mention it was underpowered? We put a suitcase in
the back and strapped a couple of mountain bikes on a rack and had
trouble meeting the minimum speeds posted on the interstate!
Also, my wife's step-mother had a '93 (I believe) 540. It was a looker
(the car, not the MIL) but was plagued with problems. It barely made it
to 100k miles before it was ready for an overhaul. It became
exasperating for them to own, as it was unpredictable as to whether or
not it would get them to their destination.
But, my rants don't stop there! My wife replaced her BMW with a '96
Pontiac Sunfire GT. It didn't take long before we simply referred to it
as "the Shitfire". We only owned it for 2 years, about 30k miles,
before replacing it with an SUV bearing a Japanese nameplate.
That's all.

FWIW, BMW's have a much better overall feel and quality interior than
anything Detroit can muster. Considering my wife's 89 325i was BMW's
"economy"/entry level car, it is MUCH better than the SHO, and comes
very close to the 92-94 750iL's we have been looking at as a replacement
for her (we are expecting a third child and need more room, and NASA's
Spec E30 series looks mighty cool!)
