When talking about the general public, you're probably right.  They just walk into the same dealer they did before, pick a car that the salesman points them to that looks good, and drive off.  They don't know what's under the hood but they know how it feels when they drive it.

As for me, name isn't that important but the car itself IS.  Previous to 1990 I had owned almost 20 Chevrolet's and never a Ford, but I went into a Ford dealer for the first time because they produced the SHO, and I wanted one.  If the Marauder was a good car and I wanted one, I would search out a Mercury dealer to buy one.
