Back in the 50's, one particular brand of wooden boat I used to have one of used a
flathead Jeep 4 cylinder L headed engine (valves in the block, like an old lawn
mower). They were mounted with the flywheel towards the front of the boat, and the
'rear' of the engine was actually the front. The flywheel was wide open....nothing
covering it. The cylinders numbered from the boat's rear to the front. A belt was
driven off a pulley in the center of the front of the flywheel, turning the
generator, which drove off its back end with a short drive shaft the raw water pump
which drew cooling water from a fitting in the bottom in the center of the boat.

It was one of those wooden boats you see on Lake Tahoe in the spring time. I got it
for a case of beer from a C-5 guy. Fixed it up, then sold it for 1/10 of what I had
in it......that sounds familiar!!
