Not really. Back in the late '70s, when they used to have the "Quickest
Street Machine Shootout", or whatever it was called at the time (and the one
that Jimmy Addison and the Silver Bullet won for a few years....come to the
Dream Cruise, the Silver Bullet is there!!), they instituted the requirement
that the cars had to drive something like 25-30 miles to the track, rather
than the "trailer job" that many folks did for "street machines" even back
then.
Obviously, these cars have always been quasi-legal, with "very" temporary
things put on them to be "legal" to be on the road. I would suspect that
part of the reason for the escort was to protect them, and keep traffic
clear. Another issue is that what's legal in KY or TX or MI may not be legal
in FL.
FWIW, as long as a car seems to be legal for the obvious stuff, it's OK with
me. I think it is important for the cars to drive some miles to the track,
though, just to show that they can do it!!

Good Lord, does anyone else see a problem with this ?
Just watching Horsepower TV, they are doing a show on the "World Street
Nationals" held in Orlando ... subtitled, "Who's got the fastest Street
Car".
When the show started they explained that the cars would drive from the
convention center to the drag strip .. excorted by the police because the
vast majority of the cars were NOT street legal!!
