[Shotimes] Ticking/oil leak

Ticking is definitely happening between 2000-3000 RPM's. Not a tranny
problem. I can make it do it on command in neutral at about 2400 RPM's
when I lightly accelerate. Above about 3000 RPM's the thing sounds fine
- in fact it sounds like a bad ass SOB. I hesitate to say where I think
the noise is coming from because I just can't isolate it yet. I'm still
fearing crank cancer! At the same time I am fearing the worst - that
maybe I still have a shim out of spec. - If this is the case I'll be
really pissed. I spent hours making sure I was in spec.
Thanks again to you Erik and to the list for helping and not being too
hard on rookies like myself!!
Josh Salaets might hook up with me in a day or two. If he listens to
this maybe he can help with the diagnosis and I'll keep you all filled
in. I know I can't be the first and only with this problem.

If you only hear the tick at about 2500 rpm's then most likely the
ticking
isn't the fuel injectors. Yeah I first noticed the ticking I thought
something was wrong with my valve lash. I still haven't gotten around
to
the valve lash adjustment yet, because of the cost for renting the tools
and
shims. Overall the majority of the SHO's I know about weren't very far
out
of spec if any even after 120K miles or so. As far as blowouts blowing
something in the tranny? most likely not, or if it did you'd know. The
injectors will tick faster as the rpm's go up as they are firing more
often
to supply fuel for the higher rpm's so sometimes you can lose the sound
of
them over the engine noise as the rpm's increase. Does the noise only
happen
in 2nd gear? Put the e-brake on and set the car in neutral.. rev the
car up
to 2500 or 3000 rpms or so to see if you still hear the noise. If you
only
hear it while in gear it definitely could be a tranny problem. Where
does
the noise sound like it's coming from? the valve covers? try to pinpoint
the
noise more to a general area after you try the other thing i just
suggested.
I know it's not easy narrowing some noises down to an area. let me know
if
you can hear the sound when the car is reved up in neutral.. that should
help narrow the problem down a little.

Dude,
Yes,MTX. I was way off wasn't I? Hope to meet you one of these days
anyway. The thing is I don't hear the noise at idle. Idle sounds
great. It's when I shift into 2nd gear(or just push throttle up to
about 2500rpm), just barely accelerate to about 2500 RPM's that I hear
it. Could the burnouts have blown something in the trans.? Just got
your latest warning message! It was fun seeing the power that Yamaha
has - but your heads up is warning is heeded and appreciated! I want to
go to a Quaife too, just can't afford it right now. I definitely notice
the one-sided torque pull on the steering without it.
Do the injectors make a ticking noise at higher than idle? When you say
you didn't notice your injectors ticking for a long time - when you did,
did you think something was wrong? Thanks for your help and input -
REALLY!
Kerry

No I'm out in Massachusetts. Wish i could take a look at it for you.
The
injectors make a ticking noise they you can definitely hear at idle.
Maybe
you are noticing that noise for the first time since you may be worried
you
did something wrong? Just an idea and I never noticed my injectors
ticking
for a long time.

Hey Eric,
Are you in Corvallis- or am I totally mistaken?? I just want somebody
who knows the SHO to listen to what I'm hearing and tell me if I should
worry or not. And, if I should worry, what I need to do?? The oil leak
is 2nd priority - the machine gun sound is the first!

There is a oil seal called the rear main seal where the tranny and motor
connect. Actually where the tranny bolts up to the engine is where the
flywheel sits and behind that the rear main seal. This is a common oil
leak
point and is most likely where you oil is coming from. The
transmission,
flywheel, etc. must come out to replace this seal.
