OK George - followed your advice to the T. Felt like I was tearing down
to do the 60k all over again!

Had to remove the crossover tube, battery, etc. just to get to the
alternator bolt. Luckily I had a 22mm socket to turn the thing with!

Cancer free as far as I can tell.

Still leaves the question about the ticking - hope to hook up with Josh
S. soon.

I'll state again: can hear it at about 2400 RPM's under light
acceleration - at about 3000+ RPM's - it just disappears. In gear or
neutral, so I know it's not a tranny problem. Maybe I'm making
something of nothing but I can't help feeling like something is
happening I should be aware of or at least have a clue about.

Thanks for the tip George! And by the way - If it was crank cancer
would it be heard thru the entire RPM range? If a valve shim is out of
spec would it be heard thru the entire RPM range? Question is: why only
between about 2400-3000 am I hearing this??

You can check positively for crank cancer by removing the upper timing
cover and
rotating the engine back and forth with the damper bolt. You don't need
to turn the
engine very far in either direction, just rock it back and forth with a
breaker bar
or long end wrench that you put over the damper bolt. Remove the cover
so you can
see the cam sprockets, and just rock the crank back and forth. If the
cam sprockets
delay even a tiny bit in moving either way, when you move the
crankshaft, you have
cancer. My car was 22 degrees of crank rotation out of time by the time
I figured
out what was wrong with it, and the second car I fixed was about 5
degrees retarted.

If you disregard all the skeptics on this list .. ;-) ..you can rock
the engine
back and forth by putting a wrench on the alternator pulley nut. It's a
lot more
handy than trying to reach the damper bolt. If the belt slips, tighten
the
tensioner a little bit...then loosen it again when you are done.
