Big time Bummer!! I don't think it was cross threaded. The damper bolt is always
easy to screw in (has been for me, anyway) to the point where it is torqued, and if
it were started wrong, it shoulda been obvious to even the newest fledgling
mechanic. That crank metal is HARD, and it would be impossible to screw the bolt in
more than a fraction of a turn if it were cross threaded. The only thing I can
think of is that it was in fact defective, and had a fissure within its shank.
After three or four times being removed and torqued, the fissure finally started to
fail during the last previous torquing, and stretched to the point where it was now
binding the threads significantly in the point where it was stretched. That,
combined with leaking coolant, caused it to bind so that it would break the next
time it was loosened.

I don't think you need to take it out for mount work.....just for going inside the
timing cover.

I have not had to remove any broken bolts in as difficult a location as this (no
rust out here, remember?), so I yield to those who have done so.....good luck!!
