>From my reading, I think the points folks were trying to make are:
1) With your reported symptoms, some folks fear there _could be_ enough
wear and damage that standard bearings _may not_ entirely compensate for the
damage, thus
2) standard size bearings _may_ or _may not_ be a long term cure.
3) _If_ the damage is such that standard size bearings don't do the trick,
expensive machine work and more involved engine disassembly will be required
so the crank can be ground down to accept over-sized bearings.
4) Rather than turning the crank and rebuilding the engine, it _may_ be
more cost effective to source and install a used engine from a boneyard.
So...
If you are not prepared to do more involved engine disassembly and incur
greater expense [3], the suggestion was to not bother checking clearances
with Plastigage and just replace with the standard size bearings since any
out of spec clearances would not be addressed anyway.
If it was my SHO, I'd probably just throw the bearings in, torque them down,
and see how it sounds afterwards. That might be good enough for a long,
long time. If not, then run it til it dies or until you're financially
ready to put in another engine/rebuild the current motor.
