[Shotimes] Starter problems

hey i'm not an automotive genious, so i need some help here.  Yesterday i was 
leaving a friend's house and when i got in my car my cd player and everything 
came on but when i tried to start it all i got was a clicking noise.  i tried 
it a couple of times and the car worked with no problem.  today i was leaving 
the bank and it did it again, but started on the second try.  Then tonight 
when i was leaving work it took me 21 tries (i counted) to start the car, always 
with the same clicking noise.  when it started it drove home with no 
problems.  now that it's in the garage, it's doing the same thing again.  Sometimes it 
will start, but most times it won't.  Is this my starter, or is it something 
else? if it is the starter, can anyone give me tips on how to replace it and 
how much the part will cost?
