By grinding out the castings and polishing the runners and surge tank I
picked up 17hp and 19ft tq in my 97. I somewhat agree about it fictiously
adding HP but I do believe that it would help when you add exhaust and other
mods.

Yes Dave the inside of my runners and tank are a mirror finish :) The
cleanest intake that you have even seen :)

Well, I don't think porting makes much of a difference at all on a fairly
stock motor. Lot's of guys have ported their heads and intakes. I don't
think there was any increase on a dyno. In fact, depending on what you read
and/or believe, porting can actually cause you to lose HP. There's a very
interesting website somewhere on this phenomenon.
I think some motors are stronger than others due to differences in cam
timing, not gasket matching.
