I agree Kerby. Hence owning one car worthy of being called a race car and
one (or 2 in my case) really fun decent handling, somewhat rare, somewhat
exotic but relatively inexpensive car that I can drive every day. Oh yeah
and it's a sleeper to most people. I know the original topic is about a
post production 300HP engine, but for those that would like to make 300HP
with their SHO it really comes down to the fact that there isn't enough
interest from the owners/manufactures to do this. There aren't companies
(or enough companies) making things like programmable ECUs, aftermarket
intakes, aftermarket heads, cams, valves, aftermarket ignitions, replacement
sub frames, replacement suspension components, the list could go on. If
there are companies making these things then they are surely very expensive.
Modding an SHO is like modding BMW's and Porsches.... It's a niche business.
As for me, I can't afford to mod my car up with to much, and it will take
some time to do the little things I have planned now. Why would I be that
concerned about it anyway, I have a car with maybe $6,000 into it in my
driveway that runs 12's and is very fun to drive. A car that has so many
parts available for it you head will spin when trying to buy something as
simple as cold air intake kit. Someone brought up the fact that it's near
impossible to change your gearing in the SHO, this and the weight of the car
have to be the biggest factors for SHO performance. SHO's are just plain
doggy off of the line, and if they weren't we'd probably be breaking a lot
of driveline components. I watched a guy at last years NMRA event at Atco
blow out his half shaft because of the sticky tires he was running. I'm not
flaming people who want to mod up their SHO. I envy people who have the
rescorces to do this, but for the average car nut like me there are better
ways to spend the money. I'll probably always have my SHO's and maybe some
day one of them will be considerably faster then stock. Just my 2 cents.
