Maybe not a "couple of laps", but that still seems to be an issue that the
Corvette has had for ages. Yes, you can then spend bucks to modify them, but
you can do that to any car.

Key thing about the "best' is that there is not a linear equation to move up
a step, meaning car "X" costs $30K, and the best-in-class, car "Y" costs
$60K. It does not mean that car "Y" is twice as good as car "X" (although it
might be....depending on what you want), it's just that it's the cost of
moving up. I personally feel that the '99 $60K 540i 6-speed was worth MORE
than twice as much as the '99 SHO that I bought for $30K. FWIW, today that
same '99 540i is worth $30-35K, and the '99 SHOs are now worth how much
again????? ;-)

I can see where it would work with video gear, but in chasing the absolute
top street machine, I don't agree that there is a quantitative "one better".
At the very top of any category are a lot of subjective variables. Sure, if
someone wants the car with the absolute fastest top-end, that can change
year-to-year. Today, you will get varying opinions as to whether the Enzo is
the "best" car, the GT-2, the Murcielago, he new Porsche GT, etc. Same with
sport sedans. I know a couple of people who feel that Jag sedans are "IT". I
personally would never buy one. To me, the M5 is "IT". Depends on what you
are looking for.

Hey, in sport compacts, either the Evo or STi are really at the top of the
heap, and they are in the low $30K range out the door!

A *couple* of lap? I don't think they would go away in a couple of laps.

And while I agree about your "best" philosophy to a point, I've learned
there is always something better. We run into that all the time with our
high end digital video equipment. A McClaren F1 street car is a (or the)
top rung performance car, but come on, who can afford it? (hey it was BMW
powered) <g> Ferarri, Lambo, Bentley, etc...always somebody up a notch. I
think the "best" philosophy could only be applied to those items which
actually fall into your budget (ie, buy the best that you can afford as very
few folks can actually afford, "the best").
