Equate terms like "the old rule" to "old wives tales".

If in doubt, go to the Tire Rack Spec site for the particular tire and size
that you are looking at. That will tell you what the mfr feels is the best
setup.

I thought I remembered the old rule (before radial tires) was that the tread

should be the same as or slightly narrower than the rim, certainly no more 
than an inch wider than the rim.  The 225/55's don't look bad on the stock 
rim, but look like they want a wider rim.
