It took me a while but I have come around to this way
of thinking. Ron corrupted me with that '99 of his and
how fast it was. I started out in the "break it in
gentle school". With my 2 SHOs and some other cars, I
broke in at 3/4 revs and 3/4 throttle for the first
few hundred or thousand miles and they were stronger
than average runners.
Since then I have broken in, hmmm, something like 16
cars in the last 4 years with between 3500 and 8000
miles in a few months. The ones I broke in hard (not
abused, but driven like they were already broken in,
or even keeping them up high in the revs with manual
shifting of the ATX multiple times per trip), pulled
much stronger than those I babied or broke in with
medium driving - exact same engine and model year in
some cases back to back.
Others who have traded cars with me often comment on
how well my cars pull compared to their similar weight
vehicles with the same engines.
I also change the oil at between 500 and 1000 miles
the first time - not sure that makes much difference
but *I* feel better.

Well it is kidna hard to build 2 exactly identical
engines, and then
test
them out under the same conditions in 2 identical
cars. I remember that
my
family has always broken in any new car a bit harsher
than the "gentle
driving" that the book calls for. and of the 2
vehicles that I got to
drive
that were once new cars to my family both felt to be a
good solid
strong
engine.
I'll make it a point to break my 3.2 in hard when I
build it up.
