Yep, just in doing a couple of quick comparisons on 22/55/16 tires:
Yoko ES100: Sec. width = 9.1", tread width = 8.3"
Dunlop SP5000: Sec. width = 9.3", tread width = 7.9"
And both have a Measured rim width of 7". In his case, I would suspect that
8" may not be optimal for the SP5000. Interesting that a rim width range is
not specified for that tire.
On a side note, the SP5000 225/50/16 tire has a section width of 9.1", and a
tread width of 8.4". Interesting compared to the 225/55/16!

I think it has a lot to do with the tire itself, Tire companys are supposed
to follow the same set of rules but they don't.
The Kumho 235/45/17 are a Perfect fit for a 7" wheel
The SZ50-ep were also
My BFG's comp TA, were not they were about an inch wider in the same size
My BFG Comp TA in a 245/45/17 were partly to blame in my small crash a
couple of years ago, they were WAY too wide for a 7" wheel. Plus I was FAT,
drunk and acting like a 16yr old :)
When I buy tires now, I compare the section width on tire rack for each tire
im interested in, for the wheels that I currently have. This is of course
on the 97 Semi track car. (split 4 ways)
1.Car shows
2..Drags
3. Road Course
4. Broken down (present status)
On the 91 I just put 225/50/16's on and looking at the budge of the tire, I
think it could use a bit wider wheel. But it will do for now. I have the
99 16.5" wides on the 91

It would be interesting to compare performance, and maybe some of you
already know the answer to this:
Say a 6" rim is optimum with say a 195 tire, then how does the performance
compare when you put a 225 tire on there? Is it better, worse, or the same.
I am guessing that for some aspects of performance it is better while for
others it may be the same or worse. (That is for braking, lateral grip,
turn-in, etc.)
>Yeah, as you say, the "APPROVED MINIMUM WIDTH"
>
>Which means that you can't sue them when they perform like shit. 225s
>should
>be on a minimum 7" width, and work the best on an 8" width. If you don't
>agree, you don't drive your car hard enough and can't tell the difference.
