Agreed.  Here are some notes I learned about doing this job.  My take is
that anyone that owns this stereo will eventually need to replace the sub
just as with the rear deck speakers.  The life of the speakers depends on
how much sun the car sees, but in any case the material will just age and
eventually fail.

The box itself is a big clamshell that has a silocone bead around it for
insulation.  At the bottom of the box is white matting which you can see in
one of the pics I snapped, and I assume is there to improve the sound.  If
you decide to replace the speaker, there IS NO NEED to open the box.  I did
this because I didn't catch the next step in time.

The speaker itself is held in place buy an adapter to mate the box the rear
deck shelf opening.  The adapter is surrounded by foam.  If you move the
foam away you will uncover 4 TOR-X screws.  Just remove these and the
speaker and adapter will come right out.  Wiring to the speaker is just two
generic blade connectors.

The following step might be optional, and applies specifically to the 6W0.
This unit has a nice rubber collar on the outer edge of the speaker that is
removable.  If you try to mount the adapter on top of the speaker, you will
find that it is higher than the collar on the JBL.  To make a better fit, I
decided to remove the collar off the defunct JBL and apply it to the 6W0.
The fitment is thus perfect.

About the sound.  This speaker works fine with the JBL amps.  No distortion
and you can hear the thumping.  I can't really tell any difference between
this and the original, which is fine with me.  Remember that you are doing
this to keep the stock stereo functional, not to win a competition
sound-off.

the JBL sub in my 93 has gone bad, and I am looking to replace it myself.
Anybody know if it is a 4 or 8 Ohm sub.  And if you could recomend a speaker
that works well in SHOs..
