Should be, but it might be time for some fresh stuff, though.
Might also try the GM Synchomesh dino juice, or the Valvoline Synchromesh
equivalent that AutoZone sells.
Does that car still have the cable shifter? Could be that things are getting
a bit worn. Might also try adjusting the clutch. I would also suspect the
clutch (that's what mine does in 2nd gear when it gets hot), but you said
the clutch wasn't that old.

When I first got the '89 I now have again from Randy
Smith it would not go into second gear. Worn felt I
think though it acted like the synchronizer was gone.
Having nothing to loose, I did the MTX drain plug mod
and put in MTL. A week of driving later 2nd gear
worked like new.
The '89 has early symptoms of 2nd going in a touch
harder than the other gears - it slips right in when
you rev match properly. I'm wondering if MTL is still
the fluid of choice for old, worn MTXs?
